I finally got a few minutes to go out w/the new piece. The wife had a baby shower to attend about 45 minutes away, she won’t drive the freeways, so she needed a ride and I damn sure wasn’t sitting around attending THAT! So I tracked down an indoor range w/a 50yd rifle. Since those shower things usually aren’t long, I didn’t have a ton of time. But, enough to get the barrel warmed up a bit.

I’m not unhappy considering I’ve never fired this platform before. You can see me walking the sights up toward zero. Or at least as close to zero as I got this outing. Still some tinkering to do. I was really also struggling @50 yds. Old eyes plus absolutely abysmal lighting in this crusty ancient indoor range.

I’ve got an outdoor range I like on my side of town I found recently. Better lighting. I’ll give 50yds a 2nd try then and see if I can close the gap before I go out longer. Truthfully, my old eyes probably won’t make 100 very well w/o magnification. I’ll likely have to look into a LPVO or similar arrangement to get there and beyond.

All in all an enjoyable first run. Rifle functioned exceptionally smooth munching on Winchester 55gr 5.56 FMJ. 50 yds w/iron sights.

Apparently one little fella got away from me down there lower left. I think I either flinched or jerked the trigger. Beats me.

As I get older, I am not as steady trying to hold on target. What really helped with that for sight-in is a BOG deathgrip tripod. Once the rifle is sighted-in, it is not a problem to shoot groups. Might be worth looking into to see if it helps. Some people use a leadsled or such. Those were never comfortable for me. Just another suggestion to try and help.

A 50 yd. Zero makes you good at 200 w 5.56 55gr. :)(y)
Thanks. That kind of confirms what I‘m starting to understand. 👍 I’m very new to pretty much anything other than pistols and shotties. Used to shoot a friend’s 30.06 in my youth. While he and his dad did a lot of elk hunting in Colorado, for the two of us plinking in Arkansas, it was for exploding 2-liter bottles. Usually 25-30 yds at most. A trained monkey can do that range with a scoped 30.06. 🤣

I was browsing bipods at Scheels the other day. (That’s a Cabbelas or Bass Pro on steroids for the uninitiated.) I’m trying to avoid a lot of weight if I can. An optic is going to add some as it is. I had a sandbag with me but wasn’t getting the right height. The range had some goofy tri-level foam blocks I was using seated but struggled a bit. none of the heights were exact for my frame.

I think I saw your tripod or at least something similar. It’s a pricey sucker. But probably a good idea for me. 👍

I was also fighting my cheek weld. Being an indoor range, I wore my ear muffs. Normally being a pistol guy, I didn’t anticipate the damn things getting in the way. Next outing will be outdoors. I’ll have different ear protection.

I was kind of glad I did wear those. These things are loud indoors. 🤣

On Amazon, it was 169.00. It works good for me, maybe not for others. Hope you get it all figured out for what works for you.

Attempts to keep costs at bay aside, isn’t tinkering trial and error half the fun? 🤣

It’s a significant learning curve for me. But, It’s been a hoot thus far. I was having so much fun yesterday I picked up the wife and she said the smile on my face meant no need to ask how it went.
