Just a quick question. I know that the "sterile area" is from the security checkpoint on to the gate, but what is the "passenger area of the terminal" Reason i'm asking is because i'm picking my wife up from the airport and was wondering if I had to keep it locked up in the car, or if I could carry into the "mall-ish" area of the airport. Thanks in advance

unfortunately you have to leave it in the car. That mall area you are referring to is the passenger area and is off limits. several years ago you could carry into the airport but not the sterile area. Now you cant do either.

Correct. The entire airport is considered the terminal. Makes Staying at the Orlando airport's hotel a bear.

As a woman I really despise this law. I'm most vulnerable when I park my car in the garage parking lot and then have to cross the parking lot to use the elevator to get to the terminal. There are NEVER any close parking spots even when I try to park as close to the elevator as I can. It is the most creepy place I can think of other than a hospital parking garage.

I have family coming down soon and will ask if I can meet them at the curb. The tricky part is that you can't sit for any length of time so I've been known to circle the parking loop until they can make it to the curb. Thank goodness for cell phones.

With enough violence and with enough voices can these laws be turned around to allow potential victims to protect themselves?

At the Ft Lauderdale airport there is a cell phone waiting area where I usually wait until I receive the call from the person I'm picking up. It take about 2 minutes to go get the person a the curbside and that way I don't have to disarm.

But do you have to park your car and walk to this cell phone area? What I'm trying to avoid is walking in the parking garage.

I haven't been to the airport in a while and certainly not since I've been carrying so maybe they have made it easier to wait for curbside service.

At the Ft. Lauderdale airport, the cell phone waiting area is a couple hundred yards from the terminals. There is a board with the arriving flight information on it that you can check while you wait. Then all you have to do is drive to curbside and pick up your "passenger." If you are squeemish about walking in the parking garage, then walking to the cell phone waiting area is not an option.

At the Orlando airport there is a cell phone parking lot where you can wait in your car until your guests call you. You don't have walk through, others would be doing the same thing as you: waiting in their cars. Think there is a sign directing you to it somewhere about where the B terminal sign is. You can probably check the OIA website for more complete info.

MommaBear, you're absolutely right! That walk through that dark parking garage, even in daylight, always makes my skin crawl. There's no security, no cameras, no escort..just you and luck of the draw. There's been several news pieces on crimes in that garage and the lack of any security. Mostly property crime, but, we all know that it's just a matter of time.

I really wish they'd at least allow for carry to the terminal, then have those lockers similar to what they use for officers to disarm going into a jail or prisons.

Like that's ever gonna happen..right?:rolf Talk about startleing the sheep!!

Even before I started carrying, I'd tell folks to meet me at the curb and use the cellphone parking lot. The only time in years I've parked to pick anyone up was when my 90 year old grandfather flew into town...I got permission to meet him at the gate.

Just so everyone is clear, because I really thought (up until ten minutes ago) this issue was well known since it should be taught in every CCW course in the nation, DO NOT BRING A GUN INTO AN AIRPORT unless it is unloaded, in an approved container with you having the only combination or key, and you are ready to declare it.

YOU CANNOT BRING A LOADED GUN INTO AN AIRPORT. Leave it in your car.

AIRPORTS AND GUNS = BAD!

Even if you are waiting for your friend to arrive and just want a coffee. Leave the gun in your car.

The TSA security screening area has nothing to do with it. You can't have a loaded gun in an airport! Anywhere. I'm serious. Anywhere. Period.

I feel much better now.

Tis sad. Florida originally allowed carry in the non-sterile areas of the airport. That changed for some reason around '96.

Technicalities..... IF you are in one of those fancy airports.. Ft Laud, MIA, TPA etc.. all of them you drive "THROUGH" the terminal.... Is it illegal to have a CC on you in your car?
