Having lurked here for many years,I have noticed that the number of new posts has declined drastically lately.
Has anyone else seen this and does anyone have an idea why?
A couple of the bigmouths got banned. That surely has some effect.

Here’s a current example of how the situation occurs. I posted something about P320 litigation to discuss what they call “uncommanded discharges” with the pistols as kind of a warning to those who owned them that there might be trouble. A number of us discussed the potential reasons for any alleged mechanical failures. I know a little bit about that particular litigation and understand how it works.

One of the members, a dentist, had his feelings hurt quite a while ago when I called him out when he was giving bogus legal advice that could cause someone to wind up in jail if they believed him. Some people don’t understand the nuances of the law like I do because I’ve been doing it for 40 years every day. In full disclosure, I think I said something to him about his constantly bragging on himself on many different things we all have seen, probably I shouldn’t have done that but at the moment it seemed like the thing to do.

Then as sometimes happens it gets real personal, I got a response to some discussion it started out with “you prick” next there were threatening private messages “I hate you more than I’ve ever hated anyone“ etc. All this over discussions on the Internet and differing opinions.

So what happens sometimes without intent to create a heckler, you get one who will go to any effort to be insulting. They are kind of “lying in wait“ for the opportunity. I made the mistake of mentioning that I had 15 cars which is true and I have a lot of them just parked in the driveway and that if one was getting broken into in the driveway I would have to fight the ego/macho driven desire to run out there with a gun versus the smart thing to do and call law-enforcement. Then I get a long personal jab “I am not a lawyer with 15 cars, ha ha ha“ etc. I understood the motivation but it’s not a big deal.

Then there is a news story interjected into the P320 thread about the now infamous guy who dropped the Jeep off for service and got sued. That provision of the law is commonly known by probably every lawyer in the country and every insurance adjuster. I tried to explain that and was met with some members giving the standard “scumbag lawyer“ comments. I tried to explain but some would not listen and preferred to castigate lawyers which I guess is understandable these days. A couple of folks who had some experience with insurance and life in general, chimed in that they understood the process.

I jokingly made a comment to one of the members. I said something like stick to what you do, you’re way off on the law. He seem to understand and “liked“ the comment. Our dentist with the bruised ego jumped in to instigate “stay in your place“ and things like that referring to my joking comment. That wasn’t enough so it came out again in giant font. Obviously it was done to stir one member to snip at another member, me.

It worked because then there was a response using the word “scumbag” about 20 times. Next, it’s pretty obvious that our dentist sent a private message to the other member and wrote a lengthy viciously insulting post that the other member just copied and posted I’m sure to the delight of our dentist.

There are different types of people on the Internet and on forums these days. Factually, I think I know a number of subjects better than most members because of my experience in life. I try to explain those matters and I try to put my money where my mouth is so to speak. That’s why I donate money to those in need generally in life and those on the forum that I see I can help. That’s why I routinely help people by private message with their legal questions, dozens of them and why I represent people for free. That’s why I have referred members to physicians and offered my connections to get them appointments. I’m not saying this to brag, it’s just how I roll and what makes me feel good about being able to do things like that.

Then there are people who just love to argue and absolutely have to be right. I don’t know which type is right or wrong, it’s just life.

Moderation in a forum is always a challenge. If you’re personal friends with a moderator it always puts them in a tough spot and it may have a tendency to let you feel a little more “unleashed”

It’s all kind of a personal decision on how you feel you should contribute if you do feel that way. People may not agree with an opinion but as long as you’re being honest about your opinion, that’s the way the cookie crumbles. When all these personal attacks occur as i’ve described above as an example, it makes you reassess whether you should continue to participate and the value you place on trying to contribute versus all of the negative crap and hurtful insults towards yourself or your profession that you have to endure. I think that’s why participation is down. That’s kind of what I’m reevaluating now.

Maybe I do come off a little authoritative on things and perhaps that’s an occupational hazard when for the last 40 years of my life with few exceptions I get at least one call a day from someone saying “what should I do in this situation?” Sometimes I just have to say “this is what the law is” and I may not have time for a lengthy debate on why the law is right or wrong.

End of venting!

Just curious how you can advise people to not read your posts or respond to them as ‘it would be best’ then you go on and continue to subtly mention them in other posts? You’re right I did understand your first slight. And I did ignore it. It’s the internet. But then you did it again in an off handed way and took another jab at me. So I called you out on it. Now you want to act like they weren’t what they were which was insults and personal attacks. That thread got closed and here you are in another one still going on about it.
And to correct you just a bit I said and will continue to say that THE lawyer who took that case is a moral less scumbag not all of them. THE dealer who decided they needed said scumbag lawyer instead of settling things without him is also a scumbag. You don’t come off as authoritative. You come off as a condescending knowitall talking down to folks. Might do you some good to listen to that instead of continuing to defend yourself because you are one of the ones who would rather post long winded defenses instead of saying ‘you know what, you’re right and I was wrong’.
Now you can carry on but mind you if you keep mentioning other people in your posts expect a response from them.

Another example of the "pot calling the kettle black" (you know who you are). Now this thread is also done!
