As a kid, I watched my Grandpa kill several in the orange groves by cutting off a sucker (low sprout) from an orange tree, and popping them behind the head. It severs their spine; they don't even twitch.
Chop head off with fixed blade? Wouldn't that require getting CLOSE to it?
    Not for me.

Yeah I'll just use my 10/22 if I see it. Was trying to be quiet. But if anyone complains I'll just hold up the sucker and I think they will shut up. Definitely don't need that thing slithering thru my chainlink fence and into my backyard. That's for sure.

My father-in-law, who was an old grove man, used to do the same thing.

I remember my mom taking rattlers with a shovel she kept in the trunk of the car. I guess it never occurred to her that I often witnessed this and might strive to duplicate it. When I proudly brought home my first kill, draped over the handlebars of my bike, she learned and then she learned me good. Seems she didn't think a ten year old should be dispatching rattlers, even puny little two foot long ones. After that I left them where I got them.

Out to 10 feet a .22 shotshell (#12, I think) will do a great job on a snake...just aim right behind the head, but CCI .22 CB Longs will do a better job without much noise.

I don't have any experience with noise suppressors but I can remember reading that rifled shotguns do not handle shot very well. It seems they spread the shot out much wider and quicker after leaving the barrel because of the spin imparted to them in the trip down the tube.

I shot a coral snake in our grove with a Taurus judge at 8' away. It took 2 shots to kill it.
I thought it would do more damage than it did to that snake.

I prefer to use a centerfire shot shell when dispatching dangerous pests; perhaps a .38 Special or a 9mm. A CCI .38 shotshell will turn a wharf rat inside out or cut a water moccasin in half.

Remington used to make an awesome shotshell load in .45 ACP. It was crimped into the profile of a ball round, and they would reliably feed and cycle in my 1911. Not to mention that they would blast a nice dense 18" pattern through both sides of a metal gas can at 10 feet.
