I did a .22 can as an individual. I used a Silencer Shop Kiosk at my local FFL07.

What I discovered is that while you don't have to bring everyone in for pictures and prints, as an individual, you have to go through a FBI Background check.

As of last report, the FBI is backed up 6 - 9 months. Calling the FBI/CJIS/NICS office will get you nowhere. They do not discuss or disclose the status of background checks.

I wonder if adding my FFL number may have made this process go faster.

    Form 4 Individual (Paper)
    Purchase: 8/12/17
    Forms Sent: 8/16/17
    Check Cashed: 8/30/16
    ATF Approval: 2/5/18

    181 Days for BATFE Approval
(faster than the current times for a trust.)

Sent to FBI for Individual Background Check: 2/6/18
    FBI Background Check Completed: PENDING
    Stamp Received: (still waiting)

You can always call the ATF NFA branch customer service number (304)616-4500. Press 1, and then press 1 again. Have your serial number and the name of the store or transferor that currently has possession of the can.

I ran across a crazy statistic it stated that there are only 1,395,000 suppressors in private ownership in the US . It was in an article about the "Hearing protection act" that never even got a vote. To me that sounded really low but I guess that trusts aren't counted in that number. The wait alone keeps people from owning one, it's an unfair infringement by the government.

    Finally....

    Form 4 Individual (Paper)
    Purchase: 8/12/17
    Forms Sent: 8/16/17
    Check Cashed: 8/30/17
Sent to FBI for Individual Background Check: 2/6/18
    ATF Approved 5/16/18
    Stamp Received: 5/30/18

9 months to the day from when they cashed the check.

I did not use my trust this time because of having to finger print and picture the only family member on it besides me 41-F. It took 1 year and 2 months exactly to the day for my 3rd can. I had no idea it would take that long I would have passed on it. Good luck to everyone with a can in tax stamp jail.

I read that the mass murder in VA. Beach had a can on one of his pistols, so now the anti-gun idiots are rushing to ban suppressors first in VA. then who knows what states are jumping on the bandwagon. Like they always say never let a mass murder go to waste.
